ive people have been rushed to hospital after a car drove up the sidewalk and struck pedestrians in North London.
Four people were taken to a major trauma center, while another was taken to hospital by an ambulance team from Hatzola. Officers are waiting for condition updates.
Shomrim, a local neighborhood watch group, said the incident was “a terrible accident.”
A witness said the driver of the car, who appeared to be in his 60s, was in a “state of shock” after the accident and was heard telling police that his brakes had failed.
The witness, who works out of a Nissan garage across the street, said two other men helped the driver out of the wrecked car.
They added: “I heard a crash, it was when the car hit the bus stop. The car was on the sidewalk and I saw two people flying in the air.
“After that, he collided with a Mitsubishi parked there and his car turned 90 degrees. Another guy on crutches was beaten.
“Some Jewish elders helped him out of the car, the people from the store came out to help.
“I called the police and they were here in two or three minutes. I saw that they were treating five people, including the driver. He was an older looking man in shock. ”
Paramedics and police officers were called to the scene shortly before 9.40 am to report that a car had run onto the sidewalk and run over pedestrians.
A police spokesman said: “The London Police and Ambulance Service are present in a collision at Stamford Hill, N16.
“A car is reported to have jumped onto the sidewalk and hit several pedestrians.”
A spokesman for the London Ambulance Service added: “We dispatched various resources to the scene, including six ambulance teams, an incident response officer, a medic in a car, a team leader and our hazardous area response teams. Also We sent the London air ambulance by car.
“Five adults were treated at the scene. We took four to a major trauma center and an ambulance team from Hatzola took one to the hospital.”
Broken glass surrounds a partially ruined bus stop at the crash site.
About 20 meters away, a damaged silver Toyota car can be seen in front of a convenience store, with the front hood completely crumpled and the windshield broken.
Police have cordoned off a large area and are examining the scene.
Hackney City Council has asked people to avoid the area.
The local authority said on Twitter: “The A10 is closed in both directions between Clapton Common and Cazenove Road after a traffic collision. Avoid the area if possible. “
