A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder in a series of stabbings in Birmingham that left one dead and several more injured, West Midlands police said.
The suspect was taken into custody at a property in the Selly Oak area of the city around 4 a.m.Monday, the force said in a statement.
He is being questioned in police custody after officers worked “until dawn” to track him down.
Birmingham Police Commander Chief Superintendent Steve Graham said: “Officers worked through yesterday and into the early hours of this morning in an attempt to locate the man we believe responsible for these heinous crimes.
“We posted CCTV footage of the suspect and got a strong response from the public. I would like to thank everyone who shared our appeal and provided information to the investigation.
“A line of investigation finally led us to an address in the Selly Oak area this morning where a man was arrested.
“This is clearly a crucial advance, but our investigation continues.”
The suspect was arrested on one count of murder and seven counts of attempted murder, a spokesman for the force added.
A 23-year-old man was killed and seven other people suffered stab wounds during the attack early Sunday morning. All the wounded were taken to hospital, where two were later discharged.
The stabbings, which took place over two hours at four locations in the city center, were described as “truly gruesome” and “unusual” by West Midlands police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson.
He told Sky News: “To think that people who were enjoying their evening were attacked by what appears to be a lone knife is truly shocking.
“Our thoughts must be with the family of the deceased and those still in the hospital recovering from their injuries.”
Police yesterday released CCTV footage of a man they wanted to track down in connection with the stabbings, and detectives claimed to have had a “strong response” from the public following the appeal.
