Southampton's Jan Bednarek is sent off
Tuesday’s loss at Old Trafford was the second time Southampton lost 9-0 in as many seasons.

Southampton requested that referee Mike Dean not direct their upcoming matches and will appeal the red card shown to defender Jan Bednarek in their 9-0 loss to Manchester United.

His Premier League teammate Arsenal will appeal the expulsion of defender David Luiz in Tuesday’s 2-1 loss to Wolves.

The Saints also don’t want Lee Mason, who was the fourth official at Old Trafford, to officiate their games.

Mason was the referee in the Saints’ recent controversial 1-0 loss to Aston Villa.

Bednarek was the second player to be sent off by Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team when he dropped Anthony Martial and conceded a penalty in the 86th minute.

Referee Dean initially only awarded Manchester United a penalty but fired Bednarek after video assistant referee Graham Scott instructed him to watch replays of the incident on the pitch monitor.

Southampton trailed 6-0 until Jan Bednarek’s late red card reduced them to nine men

Polish international Bednarek, 24, said “Martial said it is not a foul” when he left the field, before the hosts claimed a record Premier League victory.

Against Aston Villa on Saturday, Stuart Armstrong’s effort hit Villa defender Matty Cash in the arm, however VAR Dean did not instruct the on-field referee Mason to award a penalty as he decided the ball had strayed from defender’s leg first.

Mikel Arteta, Arsenal manager criticized Referee Craig Pawson’s decision to fire Brazilian international Luiz at the end of the first half in his defeat by the wolves.

The Gunners were leading 1-0 when Luiz was shown in direct red, after it was judged that he had fouled Willian José and awarded a penalty.

“I’ve seen it 10 times at different angles and I can’t tell you where the contact is,” Arteta said.
