Sony has withdrawn Cyberpunk 2077 from sale on the PlayStation Store until “further notice” and is offering a full refund to anyone who purchased it there.
“[Sony Interactive Entertainment] strives to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction, “the company wrote in an online statement,” so we will begin offering a full refund for all players who have purchased Cyberpunk 2077 through the PlayStation Store. SIE will also remove Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store until further notice.
“Once we have confirmed that you purchased Cyberpunk 2077 through the PlayStation Store, we will begin processing your refund. Please note that the completion of the refund may vary depending on your payment method and financial institution.”
I took a look at the PlayStation Store this morning, and as written, Cyberpunk 2077 is no longer listed. This also means that the game is no longer available for PlayStation 5 on the PlayStation Store, as it is currently the PS4 version that you buy and play.
CD Projekt Red said it spoke to PlayStation prior to the move.
“Following our discussion with PlayStation, a decision was made to temporarily suspend distribution of Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store.” CDPR said in a statement. “You can still buy physical versions of the game in physical stores and online. All digital and physical copies of the game that you have purchased will continue to receive support and updates as we continue to improve your experience.
“To our knowledge, as of today, anyone who is unwilling to wait for updates and wants to refund their digital copy of the game can do so by submitting a request at https://www.playstation.com/cyberpunk-2077 -Refunds / .
“We are working hard to bring Cyberpunk 2077 back to the PlayStation Store as soon as possible.”
Sony’s unprecedented decision – I’ve never seen anything like this – comes after a terrible launch of Cyberpunk 2077 on next-gen machines. It has been a gaming experience full of pitiful performance and a procession of bugs, something with which the power of the new machines is much better suited, although neither version is without its problems.
Digital Foundry has been researching the problems and considering what it will take to fix them, and the result is: a lot of work. No major patches are expected until January and February. This is not something that is going to be fixed overnight.
There has been confusion and apologies, but the question remains as to why the game was released in such a state, and a lot more work will be needed to clean up the stain of perceived response.
It’s a shame, especially since on machines capable of running it, Cyberpunk 2077 is an exceptional game. That, however, will be of little comfort to those who have purchased, but cannot enjoy, the game.
