Speaking with Russian news outlet TASS, PlayStation bigwig Jim Ryan was asked about Sony’s response to the popular Xbox Game Pass subscription service. He replied intriguingly, “Indeed, there is news to come, but not today.” The executive then went on to talk about PlayStation Now, which is the Japanese giant’s cloud streaming platform.
It’s a curious statement, because when asked a similar question earlier in the year, Ryan explained that a similar Game Pass subscription “doesn’t make sense to us.” He told Games Industry.biz: “We are not going down the path of putting new launch titles on a subscription model. These games cost many millions of dollars, over $ 100 million, to develop. We just don’t see that as sustainable. “
Obviously, the platform owner has a lot of work ahead of him with the launch of the PS5, so this is probably not the right time to start talking about other initiatives that he may or may not have in the works. Consider our piqued curiosity though: that’s a very interesting answer to an otherwise obvious question.
