Sonos is set to unveil three new products, according to a 9to5Mac report.
An ‘anonymous 9to5Mac tipster ‘has said a new Playbar, Sub and Play speaker could be launched: 5 in June. The most important detail rumored: the new soundbar will support Dolby Atmos.
That type of product, and that suggested release date, would fit nicely with the company. ‘S2’ Software Update in June: A complete overhaul of the Sonos ecosystem software, bringing an increase in audio bandwidth that will allow the introduction of “higher resolution technologies for music and home theater.” Like Dolby Atmos surround sound technology.
Sonos has had questions about whether that increased bandwidth support will pave the way for high-resolution FLAC and MQA support for music, or Dolby Atmos for movies. But this rumor from the Atmos soundbar indicates that the latter, at least, could soon be part of the Sonos offering.
If an Atmos-compatible Sonos soundbar transpires, along with the new Sub subwoofer, which is also rumored, it would take the place of Playbar and Sub released in 2013, to sit under the smaller Sonos Beam. Will it be, like the Beam, compatible with voice control? Will it have conductors that shoot up to deliver the height channels on an Atmos soundtrack, or will it rely on sound processing magic to create a sense of height through the front controllers? And how big will it be? Unfortunately, such details have not been implicated.
However, we can be pretty sure that a Sonos Atmos soundbar would cost a penny. While Atmos soundbars are becoming more affordable, they still attract premium prices, often north of £ 600 / $ 600. Our favorite so far, the Sony HT-ST5000, is still £ 999 / $ 1,300, despite having been greatly reduced since its launch in 2018.
The insider has also said that the next-generation Sonos Play: 5 speaker will arrive to replace the original Play: 5 released in 2015, but, once again, that suggestion comes without specs and feature details.
