Police believe they found the mother of a newborn baby dead in a private garden in Somerset.
The baby’s body was found by a member of the public in the Victoria Quadrant in the coastal town of Weston-super-Mare.
Avon and Somerset police had issued an urgent appeal for information after being called into the incident shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday.
The force said at the time that it was treating the child’s death as inexplicable.
Since then, the mother has been transferred to the hospital.
Announcing the development, Detective Chief Inspector Mike Buck said: “Earlier today we issued an appeal to locate the mother of a newborn baby, whose body was found in a private garden in Weston-super-Mare on Saturday morning.
“During the course of our consultations, information has been received that has helped us locate who we believe is the mother of the baby. This woman has been immediately transferred to the hospital where she will receive the expert medical care and professional support she needs.
“I would like to thank the entire Weston-super-Mare community for their help and support during what has been a difficult day for everyone involved.”
