Solskjaer: Wolves take ‘big step forward’ for Man United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is pleased with the progress Manchester United have made both physically and mentally this season.

Before this match, there had only been one goal in the last three meetings between Man United and Wolves. This tie followed a similar tone to previous encounters, being another boring affair.

The best chance of the first half was for Bruno Fernandes. The midfielder saw his effort at point-blank range saved by his international teammate Rui Patricio.

The Wolves defended themselves very well throughout the game as they restricted Man United. As the game entered injury time, it looked like both sides would settle for a point.

But with a few moments to spare, Fernandes sent a ball over Rashford. The Englishman retained it before launching a shot that was deflected to the net and passed to Patricio.

This late victory takes Man United to second place in the Premier League. The Red Devils are just two points behind Liverpool with rivals now in both games of the season.

Speaking to Amazon Prime Video after the game, quoted by BBC Sport, Solskjaer claimed that his United team is becoming more “robust”.

“It was a point we brought up earlier in the season in a meeting. We didn’t win a lot of points towards the end of the game and we have a tradition at this club.

“That has happened so many times in that final, and now we have earned quite a few points towards the end of the games, and that is both a mental and a physical aspect.

“We have a group now that is more robust both mentally and physically. We have gone through some difficult training periods, we have played a lot of matches and they are getting fitter. The fitter you are, the more you can do. But mentally it also gives you a boost knowing that you can win games towards the end.

“We only focus on the next game. I am very boring but we cannot get too far ahead. We have reached a decent position at the moment but the season is not even halfway there.

“We did not do as well as we wanted, but we won a game against a very difficult team to face.

“It is my first victory in the league against them. There have never been many goals in games, but for me it’s a big step forward, that you don’t play well but you win ”.
