Gordon Brown: SNP calls for independence are ‘out of touch’
While support for Scottish independence continues to grow, Neil said the SNP must be “honest” about the huge problems the country will face if it secedes from the UK.
Neil admitted that he believes Scotland is “very capable” of functioning on its own, cautioning that it was the SNP that he was concerned about.
In response to a Twitter message suggesting that he was disparaging Scotland, the former BBC journalist tweeted: “Not at all. Scotland very capable of running alone.
“But you have to be honest about the big issues / the impact of prosperity during the SUK’s first decade of separation.
“And if it were based on the crazy economy of SNP’s Twitter hordes, it would quickly be a banana republic without the bananas.”

His comments come after a similar dispute broke out when Dr. Tim Rideout, coordinator of the Scottish Currency Group and a member of the SNP’s Development Committee, raised the need for a Scottish pound.
Dr Rideout claimed that a restaurant meal would still be valued at the same level as the British pound the day after the new currency was created.
Mr Neil responded by saying that economics was not Dr Rideout’s “strong suit” before noting that to halt the fall of the Scottish pound, interest rates would rise, causing damaging problems for businesses.
The former BBC journalist faced a backlash from supporters of independence.

“The balance of payments will be decent at iScot.”
But Mr Neil responded by saying that Scotland will need a “hellish depreciation” to make that “decent”.
Previously, the SNP proposed an approach to using the pound without a formal currency union.

Should Scotland be an independent country?
Countries like Panama and Montenegro do it with the US dollar and the euro respectively.
Scotland’s Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon hopes to win a second independence referendum just five years after the Scottish public voted to remain part of the UK.
So far Prime Minister Boris Johnson has rejected another referendum, but polls now suggest that the majority of Scots are in favor of leaving the UK.
Sturgeon said he had “never been so sure” that the country will vote to secede from the Union.
Andrew Neil lashes out at SNP’s economy
Speaking at the party’s annual conference last month, he said: “Scotland is now a nation on the cusp of making history.
“Independence is in sight, and with unity of purpose, humility and hard work, I have never been so sure that we will make it.
“The people of Scotland have the right to choose their future.
“Now let’s focus all our efforts on making sure that we achieve that better country that they and future generations deserve.”

“We can overcome poverty, inequality, and we are leading the way to address the climate emergency.
“The question for all of us as we look ahead to the elections next May is this: who should make the decisions that shape our future?
“We know that it is the people who live here, wherever they come from, who can best harness Scotland’s vast human and natural resources for the benefit of all.”
