Snow could cause a big disruption overnight and on Friday when winter weather hits parts of the Northeast.
Snow frosts on the hills and mountains are forecast to become widespread tonight.
The Met Office has issued two separate weather advisories covering the Northeast, and disruptions to the roads are expected as a result.
The first warning applies to the western areas of Northumberland and County Durham and lasts from Thursday morning until 9 a.m. Friday.
Another 2-5cm of snow may occur above 300-400m on Thursday. During the night, the snow can briefly settle in areas as low as 150 m above sea level before the snow level rises as softer air arrives from the east.
The snow is more likely to settle on higher ground, in the Pennines, with some brief showers of snow and sleet elsewhere.
The second warning covers northern Northumberland and the Scottish Borders, where snow is expected between 10pm Thursday and 9am Friday.
Snow may settle briefly at night, although later in the evening and on Friday morning the snow level is likely to increase due to the softer air.
The snow will turn into persistent and sometimes heavy rain at lower levels.
Forecasters are warning that there could be a possibility of travel delays and vehicles being stranded.
Crashes could also be more likely during adverse weather conditions.
The weather is expected to turn dry and sunny over the weekend after the cold snap at the end of the week.
