The number of deaths recorded in Devon and Cornwall where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate in the last week has increased slightly.
The figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS), correspond to the week from December 5 to December 11, but registered until December 19, show that 41 of the 366 deaths registered in the two counties had Covid-19 mentioned in death. certificate.
The previous week saw 38 of the 346 deaths recorded in the two counties that had Covid-19 mentioned on the death certificate.
Due to the average lag between infections and deaths, the majority of deaths were due to infections detected during the second national shutdown.
There were 13 people deaths in East Devon, seven in Exeter, four in Cornwall and North Devon, three in Mid Devon, two in Plymouth, South Hams, West Devon and Torridge, and one in Torbay and Teignbridge.
Of the 41 deaths recorded in week 50 (December 5-11), 14 occurred in residences, 26 in hospitals and one in a “communal establishment”.
The deaths were:
- A nursing home death and a Plymouth hospital death
- A nursing home for someone from Torbay
- Two deaths in nursing homes and two deaths in Cornwall people’s hospitals
- Four deaths in nursing homes, eight deaths in hospitals and one death in a communal facility of someone from East Devon

Two other deaths, one in Plymouth at the hospital and one in a Torbay nursing home from week 49, were included in this week’s statistics.
The Isles of Scilly has yet to see a COVID-19 related death.

The figures show in which municipality the place of habitual residence of the deceased was located. Deaths in hospitals after a positive coronavirus test since December 11 will be recorded in next week’s figures, provided the deceased lived in Devon and Cornwall, the death was recorded and COVID-19 is mentioned in the death certificate.
