Sky Sports apologizes for ‘stereotyping Latino culture’ after Graeme Souness comments on Erik Lamela

SKY SPORTS apologized for Graeme Souness’s “Latino culture stereotype” after the expert named Erik Lamela of Tottenham as an actor.

Social media erupted when Lamela elbowed Anthony Martial and then dramatically collapsed after he was slapped in retaliation, prompting the Manchester United forward to see red in the Spurs 6-1 fight.

Lamela was criticized for falling too easily, but Sky Sports apologized after Souness claimed the Argentine's behavior was 'very Latino'

But former Liverpool player and manager Souness went further in his criticism, eliciting an equally angry response.

The former Newcastle boss said about Argentine full-back Lamela: “He’s fallen, he’s pathetic. He is very Latin.

“If one goes, they both have to go, it’s pathetic.

“Is that what the English Premier League is about? We, and when I say ‘we’ I mean the British, we do it differently.”

Tottenham legend Ossie Ardilles was among those angered by Souness’s comments.

Along with a video of an incredibly heavy challenge from Scots playing days, World Cup winner and former Spurs boss Ardilles posted: “I object to Graeme Souness’s ‘Latin’ comment on @ErikLamela.

“Stereotyping all Latino soccer players in this way is tremendously unfair.

“It would be the same as saying that this so-called tackle represents the ‘British’ style. Which is clearly not the case.”

Sky host David Jones later said on air: “Now I have to say before we go, early in the show we criticized Erik Lamela’s role in the expulsion of Anthony Martial in the Manchester United-Spurs game.

“We would like to apologize for any offense that was caused and the stereotypes of Latino culture.”

United were already 2-1 down when Lamela faced Martial as they waited in the area just before half an hour.

Lamela thrust his arm into Martial’s throat, who responded by tapping him lightly on the cheek in indignation.

The former Roma Lamela star held his arms out in protest, then grabbed his face and fell to the ground in stages.

Lamela should be gone too, says Mark Halsey

ANTHONY MARTIAL was expelled for an act of violent conduct, but Erik Lamela should have received the same punishment.

What was the difference in their behavior? The only difference was that Tottenham’s Lamela was an embarrassment in the way he fell – the Argentine was given a red card to the Manchester United striker.

Was it violent behavior? Not for me. And if Martial had acted the same way, Lamela would have been fired as well.

When you raise your hand, you risk getting a red card.

Both should have been warned for adopting an aggressive attitude towards the other.

But I’m not convinced that referee Anthony Taylor saw Lamela’s initial contact, so I can’t understand why VAR referee Stuart Attwell did not recommend a monitor review.

Spurs coach José Mourinho felt that United should have finished with eight men. I don’t think Eric Bailly deliberately stepped on Harry Kane’s calf. VAR saw the incident and felt it was not a red card.

But Luke Shaw was lucky not to be sent off for a serious foul play challenge on Lucas Moura. He had no chance of winning the ball and if the contact was higher he could have broken Moura’s leg.

Sky Sports commentator Gary Neville said of the repeated incident: “Smooth, smooth. I think Lamela does it a little bit and he does it a little back.

And United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer attacked Lamela afterward, while accepting Martial’s dismissal was “no excuse” for such a humiliating defeat.

Solskjaer said: “It’s a bad reaction from Anthony. But if that (Lamela) was one of my players, I would hang him to dry like that. He shouldn’t react like that.”
