A major highway through Argyll has been closed by a “significant landslide” for the second time in six weeks.

The A83 at the Rest and Be Thankful was covered in dirt and debris when 75 mm (3 inches) of rain fell in 24 hours.

Highway operator Bear Scotland said the A83 and the nearby former military road would be closed Sunday night.

in a

post on Twitter, said the landslide was ongoing and engineers were unable to complete safety assessments.

The route only reopened on Monday after a 10,000-ton landslide in early August.

It was closed overnight on Saturday as a security measure after meteorologists warned of heavy rain.

The closures mean drivers will have to follow a 95-kilometer (59-mile) detour.

A yellow Weather Office warning for rain is in effect in parts of western Scotland until midnight on Sunday.

The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa) said 75mm of rain fell in 24 hours at Rest and Be Thankful over the weekend.

There were similar levels of rainfall across the country and a series of flood warnings and alerts were implemented.

Mark Franklin, separate service flood manager, said Scotland had been “hit” by another weekend of wet weather and there were floods in the west, center, north and south of Scotland.

“While Sunday sees an improving outlook for central and southern Scotland, we will see continued heavy rains throughout the day in the North West.”

“This is likely to lead to more localized flooding of land and roads, as well as some transportation disruptions before improving on Monday.”

“People who live, work and travel in these areas are advised to make sure they have signed up for Floodline and are prepared to take steps to protect property.”
