‘Short notice and vague guidance’: people trapped in limbo on both sides of the Lincolnshire Level 4 border

With Lincolnshire now under Level 4 restrictions, life is suddenly much more complicated for thousands of people who live on one level but work or go to school on another.

The government placed Lincolnshire under the strictest Level 4 restrictions due to increasing infection rates, particularly in Lincoln, West Lindsey, and South Kesteven.

North East Lincolnshire shares a border with East and West Lindsey, but despite East Lindsey having one of the lowest infection rates in the country, it is now under the same restrictions as the rest of Lincolnshire.

It means that all non-essential shops, hairdressers and entertainment centers closed as of midnight last night.

People should stay home and travel only for essential reasons.

The rules mean that there is now a clear boundary between Northeast Lincolnshire Level 3 and Lincolnshire Level 4 for the first time: people from Grimsby and Cleethorpes should not travel to nearby Holton le Clay or Tetney for non-essential reasons.

People living on the Northeast Lincolnshire border now have to worry about getting in and out of Level 4 restrictions

Rebecca Bates, a business owner, runs Lilly’s tearoom at Keelby in West Lindsey, but lives in Healing.

She said: “I’m not sure how these new changes will affect business, but I live in Healing and I need to cross Level 4 to get to work so I hope people realize that they can still do the same.

“But I feel a lot of people who live near the border. I know a lot of people in Keelby whose children go to Healing School. What are they supposed to do in this situation? It seems very complicated for a lot of people now.

“It will alter people’s perceptions, because Level 4 is called” Stay Home. ”

“We have a lot of clients from North East Lincolnshire and North Lincolnshire, as well as Keelby and other West Lindsey residents.

“Things have changed dramatically for us, but it was worse when we were told that we could no longer have customers sitting down, so we had to transform our business to accommodate it.

“Fortunately, we should still be able to stay open as a take-out service, and we source our food from a wholesaler’s business, so we don’t have to worry about stock issues.”

Another person, wishing to remain anonymous, is a 22-year-old barista who lives in Tier 4 Tetney but works at Tier 3 Cleethorpes.

They said, “I’m in a very difficult situation and I’m not sure what to do.

“I do all my grocery shopping in Northeast Lincolnshire.

“We only have one corner store in Tetney, so we all depend on the supermarkets in Grimsby to buy food.

“I have to use public transportation, so traveling to the Grimsby and Cleethorpes area is my only option.

“But I’m not even sure I can go to work.

“The news caught me off guard, I was at work when I heard it.

“My boss came down the stairs and said that he might not be able to work tomorrow due to restrictions.

“It’s a very short notice and it leaves a lot of people trapped below their reach.

“A lot of people shop in Northeast Lincolnshire from Holton-le-Clay and Tetney, as well as going to work here.

“Information for workers is vague.

“I am not an essential worker, but my workplace is still open, but they haven’t told me if I can work or not.

“I still have bills to pay, so I can’t stop working.

“It’s very last minute and very difficult for a lot of people now. I hope we get more clarity soon.”
