Three gendarmes were shot dead and a fourth wounded, in central France, while responding to a domestic violence incident, the Interior Ministry said. A search for the suspect is in progress.
A 48-year-old man shot officers Tuesday night in an isolated village near Saint-Just in the Puy-de-Dome region, after police tried to rescue a woman who had taken refuge in a house. , according to the LCI news channel. .
The slain officers were 21, 37 and 45 years old, the ministry said.
The Mayor of Saint-Just, François Chautard, said the incident appeared to have started with a family dispute and armed gendarme units were dispatched to the scene to evacuate nearby residents and secure the area.
One officer was fatally shot and another was wounded before the suspect set his home on fire. The man then fired again when reinforcements arrived, killing two, the Clermont-Ferrand prosecutor’s office told AFP.
