While most supermarkets have strict social distancing measures, a terrifying video shows just how far the coronavirus can spread through the aisles.
A new study suggests that staying two meters away from people may not be enough to stop the spread of the virus.
Researchers from Aalto University have revealed that a single cough can spread Covid-19 throughout a supermarket, reports The Mirror.
In the study, the researchers looked at how extremely small respiratory particles are carried in the air after coughing, sneezing, and even talking.
The team modeled a scenario in which a person coughs in a supermarket aisle and surprisingly found that the particles spread rapidly through the supermarket.
Professor Ville Vuorinen, author of the study, said: “Someone infected with the coronavirus can cough and walk away, but then leaves extremely small aerosol particles that carry the coronavirus. These particles could end up in the respiratory tract of other people nearby.”
According to the findings, researchers are urging the public to stay home if it doesn’t feel good.
Jussi Sane, Chief Specialist at the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, said: “Stay home if you are not feeling well and keep a physical distance from everyone.
“The instructions also include coughing into the sleeve or a handkerchief and taking care of good hand hygiene.
“Based on the consortium model, it is not yet possible to directly issue new recommendations.
“However, these results are an important part of the set and should be compared with data from real-life epidemic studies.”
