Severe flood warnings, meaning lives are at risk, were issued on Boxing Day for the Bedford area and three other locations.

The Environment Agency said there had been a lot of rain in the Great Ouse Basin and more was expected, which would bring “a significant disruption to the community” and possibly affect electricity services as well.

Also covered by severe flood warnings are the Cogenhoe Mill caravan site and the Nene River at Billing Aquadrome with nearby commercial parks.

Christmas day saw floods that forced hundreds of residents in parts of Bedfordshire to flee their homes after the river overflowed and the water flooded bridges and roads.

As well, over a thousand people were forced to flee the Billing Aquadrome holiday park in Northamptonshire County on Christmas Eve when severe flood warnings were set for the River Nene.

Northamptonshire Police said the water had reached 5 feet in height in some places, and emergency services used boats to get residents in the worst affected areas to safety.

Detective Superintendent Jamie Piscopo said: “Emergency services are working hard to ensure residents can return to the site as soon as possible, however it is currently not safe to do so.”

“We recommend that you stay away until such time as it is safe to do so.”

Storm Bella is expected to bring heavy rain and high winds of up to 70 mph to some other parts of the UK on Boxing Day, the Met Office said.

An amber wind warning has been issued for parts of South Wales and southern England and a yellow wind warning in England, Wales and southern Scotland will be in effect from 3pm on Boxing Day.

A yellow rain warning was also issued for parts of Scotland, Wales and much of the north and south west of England.

As of 3:30 am on Saturday, there were 78 flood warnings, which means flooding is expected and immediate action is required; and 101 flood alerts, which means floods are possible and people need to be prepared.

Natural Resources Wales said there were two flood warnings, for the Lower Dee valley from Llangollen to Trevalyn Meadows and the Ritec River at Tenby, and five flood warnings. There were no serious flood warnings.
