Tottenham have confirmed the signing of Real Madrid’s left-back Sergio Reguilón to a five-year contract, for a fee that could amount to £ 32 million.

Reguilon, who will wear jersey number three, flew to London on a private jet owned by Tottenham president Daniel Levy on Friday morning alongside Gareth Bale.

Both players successfully completed medical tests in Madrid on Thursday and are likely to meet the conditions that will allow them to avoid quarantine in the UK.

As well as having come from an elite sporting environment where they have adhered to coronavirus protocols, players must have returned negative test results within five days before entering the UK.

Reguilón, 23, was named the best left-back in La Liga for his performances last season while on loan at Sevilla.

However, Real Madrid are well supplied at the position, with Brazilian international Marcelo and Frenchman Ferland Mendy already on their squad, so they were eager to sell Reguilon to raise funds to balance the books.

The real boss Zinedine Zidane congratulated Regilon on the change and says that the full-back earned his way over the Spurs

“We have two players in each position and I have two full-backs,” Zidane said.

“What I can’t have is three or four because then it becomes a problem. I wish Reguilon all the best because he had a good season at Sevilla and now he deserves to go and join Tottenham.”

Manchester United, Chelsea and Everton were previously interested in signing Reguilon, and the Merseyside club made a £ 18 million offer for the defender in July.

Spurs head coach José Mourinho seems eager to strengthen his squad after a disappointing 1-0 loss to Everton in the first weekend of the Premier League season.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg arrived from Southampton and Matt Doherty arrived from the Wolves earlier in the transfer window. The Spurs also signed former England goalkeeper Joe Hart on a free transfer.

The signings of Gareth Bale and Sergio Reguilon could see Tottenham’s formation change as José Mourinho completes one of the biggest tactical changes of his long and illustrious career as a manager.

Bale’s return would be a huge blow to Spurs and rekindle the enthusiasm of the fans, but the onus would fall on Mourinho to make the best use of his undoubted ability. The acquisition of Bale’s young teammate at Real Madrid could be a key factor in achieving this.
