It was another miserable weekend for Ferrari as they posted a double retirement in their home race, but Sebastian Vettel was at least happy with where his brake failure occurred.
Vettel was running P17 on lap 6 and had George Russell’s Williams chasing him.
The four-time world champion was told by team radio that there was a problem with the left rear of the car.
That problem turned out to be the brakes that exploded on the way to the Parabolica.
Vettel confirmed it was a brake failure and would go straight through Turn 1, pulling out the styrofoam.
From there Vettel managed to crawl back to the pits and withdraw from the race while continuing his Ferrari misery.
“It’s the worst, but at least it happened in the best place,” Vettel told reporters.
“If it happens elsewhere, it’s not so nice. I completely lost pressure on the pedal and went straight.
“In the previous laps I had problems, but we handled the brakes, but obviously it was pretty bad.
“I was struggling, I got off to a very bad start on the hard tires and lost positions. Then we had problems, we had to cool down the car and the brakes failed, so a short race. “
Vettel’s sorry last season with Ferrari shows no signs of improvement, but he said you can’t always get what you want.
“It is very difficult at the moment for the whole team, but we are in that position and we have to do the best we can to have a dignified end to the season,” he said.
“We still have a lot of races ahead of us. Of course if I could choose I want to be in front [of the pack] But sometimes you can’t choose and you have to deal with what you have.
“We have to keep our heads up even though it is difficult.
“In that sense it is good that there are no fans, but life is like that, it always depends on where you look and I think that although professionally there are not many good things at the moment, there are always some. positive, so it’s just a matter of what you focus on. “

Next up for Ferrari is the Tuscan Grand Prix at Mugello, possibly an even more home race for the team as they own the venue.
However, Vettel said his expectations are “very low.”
“It’s clear in terms of expectations, you see where we are and we can’t wait long,” he said.
“I think in the last few races we have struggled a bit to make the car work 100%. I hope that in Mugello we are a little better, but that does not mean that we are fighting for the podium, so you have to be realistic.
“Expectations are very low, but hopefully we have a smooth and smooth weekend, it would be a good start for me.”
