A 15-year-old boy was in critical condition at the hospital last night after being shot in the face on his way to school.

The alleged attacker, believed to be an old friend, is said to have been waiting outside the teenager’s home.

The anonymous Year 11 student had returned to school for the first time since the confinement when he was shot in the jaw, according to witnesses.

The gunman is said to be a fellow student at school. Last night, the police were questioning a 15-year-old man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The shooting occurred at 8.40am in an upscale area of ​​Kesgrave, near Ipswich, Suffolk. Paramedics spent 90 minutes fighting to help the boy before he was flown to Addenbrooke Hospital in Cambridge.

Friends described the victim, a Kesgrave High School student, as a ‘lovely boy’ and a ‘normal boy’ who enjoyed being a scout and music.

Witnesses claimed that the two children used to be friends, but had quarreled.

Two hours after the attack, armed police pounced on the alleged assailant in another part of Kesgrave. Residents described their surprise when a dozen firearms officers pounced with dogs.

The boy was said to have been found hiding in a convertible car belonging to his father in front of a large single-family home.

‘He was wearing sweatpants and a sweatshirt. He said nothing. I had seen that car early in the morning around 9am parked outside my house, but there was no one in it then. I didn’t see the gun, but the police forensics are still searching the car.

Officers were investigating last night whether he drove to the scene before fleeing despite not being old enough to drive.

Another resident said the suspected gunman hid in his backyard but escaped before armed police arrived.

He said, ‘They woke me up because my dogs were freaking out in the back of the house.’ He added that the suspect had a hoodie over his arm that hid everything he was wearing.

Last night a friend of the victim’s family said: ‘He is completely normal, he does Scouts, he has piano and guitar lessons. He is literally a completely normal, straight and genuine child. It’s so random for me. When I found out, I thought it might be a random step like in America.

The victim’s parents, who work in the tech industry, and other members of his family were said to be devastated.

A mother of a student at the school wrote on Facebook: ‘My daughter and friends were walking to school and heard what exactly sounded like a gunshot. So many people [were] screaming and a lady saying “Run! Someone has been shot ”. I had four terrified children who ran back to mine.

Last night, police said they are not looking for anyone else for the attack.

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson told the Commons: “Our thoughts are with the young man, his family and the entire school community at this very difficult time.”
