56 more people have died from coronavirus in Scotland in the last 24 hours, the Scottish Government has confirmed.

The latest figures show that 1,357 new Covid-19 cases were recorded overnight, bringing the total number of positive cases to 79,017 since the pandemic began.

At today’s briefing, Deputy Prime Minister John Swinney said the death toll in Scotland now stands at 3,244.

According to the data, 1,228 people are currently being treated in hospital and 96 in intensive care.

John Swinney announced the latest figures

It comes as three parts of Scotland officially ascend to stricter levels of coronavirus restrictions today, and there are fears it could get worse.

Angus, Fife and Perth and Kinross are now officially in the third tier joining the Central Belt areas, including Glasgow and Edinburgh.

However, the Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS region councils were warned that they could reach the fourth highest level in the next review.

Yesterday Prime Minister Nicola Strurgeon warned: “We are concerned in some areas, particularly in the Central Belt, where the number of cases has stabilized but has stabilized at a stubbornly high level.

“That creates a risk for the winter period and also increases the risks associated with the Christmas period.”

“We will consider this carefully over the next few days and assess whether further action is required.”
