Scots are prohibited from traveling to airports, but can still take flights abroad

It is now illegal for millions of Scots to travel to an airport, even though they are still allowed to take flights abroad under new rules, it has been revealed.

The Scottish government yesterday announced travel restrictions that prohibit more than two million people living under blockade level three or four from traveling outside of its council area.

SNP Minister Mike Russell was questioned today by members of Holyrood’s Covid committee about the practicalities of the new restrictions.

Scottish leader Lib Dem Willie Rennie asked if the new travel ban also covered non-essential international travel.

Russell said no, but insisted that any trip to an airport or ferry port to catch a nonessential flight or sail would be considered illegal.

The SNP minister said: “International travel will not be illegal because the UK must do it, but traveling to the airport or port for that purpose would be against regulations.”

It is now illegal for Scots to travel to an airport if they live in a council area located on level three or four of the blockade.

He added that Scots living in Edinburgh or Glasgow will also be banned from traveling to airports within their respective cities.

It creates a scenario in which those living in cities could travel to the nearest airport to test for Covid, but would be fined if they tried to catch a flight.

Reacting to the news, Scottish Labor leader Richard Leonard said: “This is absolutely absurd.

“We urgently need clarity, not even more ill-conceived legislation that raises as many questions as it answers.”
