Nicola Sturgeon has said that the North and South Lanarkshire council areas are being considered for the highest level of restrictions under the proposed tier system.

The Prime Minister told Holyrood that the areas of the central belt covered by more stringent measures would likely move to Level 3, while the rest of the country would be Level 2.

He added that local authority areas, including the Highlands, Shetland, Orkney, Western Isles and Moray, were expected to enter Level 1, while Dundee could also enter Level 3.

Sturgeon: An expert advisory group will be established to explore the reintroduction of music in licensed venues.

North and South Lanarkshire can enter level 4

Sturgeon said the high infection and hospitalization rates in North and South Lanarkshire meant that the regions were being considered for Tier 4 of the new tier system. He added that new figures suggested that the spread of the virus could be under control in the areas and said it would be considered before making a final decision.

Sturgeon said Tiers 1, 2 and 3 of the five-tier system will resemble various restrictions that have been in place in Scotland since late summer.

He explained that level 4, the highest level, would involve measures that included the closure of non-essential stores. He added that Level 4 would only be imposed when absolutely necessary.

The FM said that with winter approaching, Scotland is not yet in a stable position, despite some evidence that restrictions on domestic mixing appear to be slowing the spread of the virus.
