Scotland could be covered in nearly 50 centimeters of snow when an Arctic blast descends on the country starting next week.

Harsh winter conditions are expected to begin starting Thursday, January 7, when snow moves toward the northwest of the country, according to the WXCHARTS weather website.

They will then continue in widely dispersed areas of the country in the following days.

Some southern parts of the country could also see heavy snowfall, and Midlothian is expected to be covered in around 23cm of white material on January 8.

Northern Scotland could be very cold on January 9

Around 19 inches of snow could fall in the areas around the Isle of Skye when conditions peak on Sunday, January 10.

Weather Outlook’s Brain Gaze expects conditions to be ‘disruptive’ across the UK from next week.

He told the Mirror: “It will remain cold with increased risk of rain in eastern Britain.

“I hope they bring a mix of rain, sleet and snow.

“Most likely the snow is inland and on the hills where disturbing accumulations are likely to accumulate.”

The Met Office has given a more cautious long-term weather forecast, with “some sleet and snow” expected for the extreme northwest of the country next week.

Icy conditions are expected to continue in Scotland next week as temperatures remain below average for this time of year.

Rain and strong winds are forecast for mid-month as temperatures rise slightly.

Meteorologists have warned of heavy snow conditions starting next week

A spokesperson for the Met Office added: “During mid-January, unstable conditions are likely to affect the southern and central parts of the UK and drier weather is expected for the north and west.

“Although overall it remains cooler than average, there may be some milder interludes in the south.

“Towards the end of the month, colder conditions become more likely, which brings a greater chance of snow.”
