A magnitude 2.0 earthquake with a depth of six miles struck parts of the Southern Highlands in Scotland on Saturday afternoon.

Residents of Dumfries, Kirkpatrick Durham and Thornhill reported “a thud” and “weak tremors.”

The British Geological Survey (BGS) said the earthquake occurred just before 1pm.

Initial BGS data suggested that the depth of the earthquake was six miles and its epicenter was about five miles west of Dumfries.

Considered a low-level earthquake, it appears to have caused minimal disruption.

Locals on Twitter commented on the earthquake, one likening it to “a noisy tractor” and another joking: “As it has been this year, I hope Godzilla is not waking up.”

The BGS is asking locals to help their seismology team by filling out a “felt report” that describes their experience of the earthquake.

Small earthquakes near ground faults are not uncommon in parts of Scotland.

A town in the southern highlands called Comrie has been nicknamed “Shaky Toun” because of its regular tremors.
