Roy Keane believes that Jack Grealish’s performances over the past 12 months should be enough to convince the remaining skeptics that the Aston Villa captain has.
Grealish has taken his game to a new level since Villa was promoted in 2019, dominating Premier League matches and showing his talents on the international stage for England.
He guided Villa to safety last season with eight league goals and six assists and is on track for an even better campaign this time with three goals and three assists in as many outings already.
Keane previously questioned Grealish’s request in a scathing criticism of the 25-year-old during Villa’s relegation fight earlier this year, but the former Manchester United midfielder took a very different tone before England’s win against Wales. Thursday.
He told ITV: “I think the big question mark about Jack in the last few seasons was, we all see that he is a talented kid, he has a lot of courage, he always wants the ball.
“[But the problem was] your final product or final pass. It certainly produced that last season and the way this season has started. “
Few would disagree. Indeed, former Arsenal and Villa defender Martin Keown compared Grealish to Gascgoine after the Villa playmaker shone in his England debut at Wembley.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Keown said: “They’ve certainly given Gareth Southgate a bit of thought, if you look at the previous game with Sterling, Kane and Sancho.
“We have another three now who can come in and challenge those three. Last night I thought Grealish was magnificent.
“The way he wants the ball in every situation, holding it, he’s powerful, he has that quality on the ball.
“One thing is for sure now that we have a group of players to turn to and Grealish definitely belongs to that level, we are talking about comparisons with Gazza.
“He loves having the ball and not everyone does it at that level, I can tell you.”
