Roy Hodgson jumped to Christian Benteke’s defense after his red card against West Ham, calling referee David Coote’s decision “ridiculous”.

Benteke scored but was later sent off when Crystal Palace survived by playing 20 minutes with 10 men in a 1-1 draw with West Ham.

Benteke went from hero to villain by receiving a second yellow card for an elbow in Tomas Soucek, having received a card for a similar challenge in Angelo Ogbonna.

Hodgson was stumped by the expulsion.

“It was a ridiculous decision,” he enraged.

“He just tried to use his arm to leverage and honestly win the ball. It’s always likely to happen if both players are trying to win it.

“It’s weird sitting here and saying these things like you’re a monster who wants everything to go his way.

“Decisions like that ruin football games. I am bitterly disappointed to see Benteke sent off for two honest challenges.”

As the decision was on a second yellow card, the VAR was unable to review the incident.

“I found out about that tonight, that was news to me,” Hodgson added.

“The most important thing is that it is a matter of analysis and evaluation of the game situation, there is no guarantee that another referee will have a different evaluation, but David Moyes and I agreed that there has to be some possibility that the arms rub against the face of people in aerial challenges.

“I can’t understand his two yellow cards.”
