GRAMGood evening and welcome to our live Anthony Joshua vs Kubrat Pulev blog. We’ll bring you round-by-round live fight updates from Wembley Arena, with the main event scheduled to start after 10 p.m. In the meantime, we’ll have compilation, news, analysis, and then undercard action starting at 8 p.m. or so. .
The fight will be shown on Sky Sports Box Office for the hefty £ 24.95 fee, so if you’re in the mood to shell out for that, I hope this live blog sees it well.
There was a bit of argy-bargy at the weigh-in. Joshua tipped the scales at 17 stones and 2 pounds, much lighter than he was against Andy Ruiz. As he got off the scale, Pulev faced him in the face and there was a confrontation between the two men. The Bulgarian had told AJ that his time as champion was coming to an end and AJ, normally a great customer in these situations, reacted. They did not come to blows, although Joshua said: “I would have slapped him on the jaw right there.”
Pulev chimed in almost identically. At 39 this is his last best hope, and he brings a record of 28 wins in 29 public relations fights. Only Wladimir Klitschko has tarnished that record. He has an A + jab, and will seek to control distance by fighting. AJ is faster and hits harder, but it will remain to be seen if he looks for the hit-and-move approach that worked successfully, if not very entertaining, against Ruiz in the rematch. Or will AJ go looking for the knockout?
Of course, with all due respect to Pulev, this is a stepping stone for AJ. The fight the British sports world wants to see is Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. And you can bet Eddie Hearn wants to see that too. AJ’s defeat tonight would be a huge wrench in the works, and indeed, from a business standpoint, it’s simply inconceivable. But sport does not respect all that …
AJ is risking his three world titles tonight. It is said that he earns ten million pounds and Pulev three. Speaking of money, there are 1,000 fans at Wembley Arena tonight, paying between £ 100 and £ 1,000 for the privilege. If you like gambling, these are our tips. I just mentioned Fury, his brother Hughie is fighting on the card.
Live sports crowds, Saturday night, what more do you want? Coverage is coming. Eddie Hearn says, “Never mind Fury, that’s irrelevant. It’s about winning tonight by any means necessary. He can bore me to death if he wants, but he has to win.”
