‘It’s a shameful decision’ – Rio Ferdinand SLAMS referee David Coote for disallowing his own penalty ‘dunk’ after a loose tackle by Bruno Fernandes over Conor Gallagher in Manchester United’s win over West Brom at Old Trafford
Rio Ferdinand has criticized the decision to void a penalty awarded to West Bromwich Albion when the Baggies fell in a 1-0 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Slaven Bilic’s team made United work for the three points with a penalty from Bruno Fernandes retaking the difference in a game where former United player Sam Johnstone dazzled between the posts for the visitors.
But the Baggies will leave Old Trafford feeling bad that they were denied what seemed like a clear penalty spot after Fernandes dropped Conor Gallagher just after halftime.
Rio Ferdinand has criticized the decision to overturn a West Brom penalty on Saturday
Bruno Fernandes was at the center of the action when United beat Albion 1-0 at Old Trafford.
Referee David Coote was advised to consult the courtside monitor and review the decision he had made and determined that the decision should be reversed.
The incident was even more damaging as moments later United received their own penalty, which turned out to be the difference on Saturday night.
And Ferdinand has criticized the decision to override the penalty, insisting that the significant change had a major impact on the outcome of the game.
“It is a shameful decision.” said the United legend on BT Sport.
He got it right the first time. It’s a shame nailed. How can you go against your own decision about it?
‘The game has been pulled from West Brom’s nose. That was so clear. ‘
The Portuguese appeared to have fouled Conor Gallagher and David Coote conceded a penalty
But the VAR recommended that the decision be reviewed and Coote overturned the call for the Baggies.
Former referee Peter Walton could not justify Coote’s decision to overturn his own decision.
“I didn’t think there was a clear and obvious mistake,” he told BT Sport.
‘I don’t think the VAR should have gotten involved. By asking the referee to approach the field side monitor, they are inferring that he made a mistake. ‘
As has been the case in most matches since arriving from Sporting Lisbon in January, Fernandes was at the center of the action when United scored their first three points at home in the league this season.
The 25-year-old gave his perspective on the game’s three key moments: his incident with Gallagher, the missed penalty shot saved by Johnstone and the repeated penalty.
United got all three points in a below par performance on Saturday night.
The win over West Brom are United’s first three points won at home in the league this season
“I felt at the first moment that I touched the ball,” he said. “What I felt is that first I touched the ball and then the player.
‘I scored the second, but I need to dial the first. The three points are the most important. I think we will do much better and we will.
“It is very important for us to win this game because we need points in the league. We create a lot, but I think we can do a lot better. ‘
