Blizzard has announced Diablo 2: Resurrected, a remastering of the popular action role-playing game from 20 years ago.

Diablo 2: Resurrected includes a remastering of the original 2000 game and the 2001 Lord of Destruction expansion, featuring high-resolution 3D visuals and Dolby 7.1 surround sound.

It will be out later in 2021 on PC, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. There is cross progression, but no cross game. There is cooperative mode for up to eight players, but there is no couch cooperative mode. The PC version has driver support. An alpha technical test will begin soon. You can sign up at Diablo2.com.

Diablo 2: Resurrected takes the original 2D sprite-based and layered full 3D physical rendering, dynamic lighting, revamped animations, and spell effects on top with up to 4K resolution.

The idea is to recreate the original gameplay, so you can switch between the original and modern images at will. However, the game’s 27 minutes of cinematics have received the remake treatment, shot by shot from scratch.

Blizzard has left Diablo 2 quirks intact, such as balance issues and translation errors, but has added quality of life improvements, such as a shared stash. No need for a mule character!

All character classes from Diablo 2 and Lord of Destruction are present and correct (the Amazon, Barbarian, Necromancer, Paladin, and Sorceress from the main game, and the Assassin and Druid from the Lord of Destruction expansion).

Diablo 2: Resurrected is in development at Blizzard and in-house Vicarious Visions studio, which joined Blizzard following the release of the magnificent Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2.
