A herd of 10 sperm whales have washed up on a beach in East Yorkshire in a mass stranding and rescue teams fear at least five are already dead.
British Divers Marine Life Rescue dispatched a team of medics with a rescue team to the scene to identify and monitor the situation at 9 am on the coast between Tunstall and Withernsea.
The number of stranded whales is currently ten, they are in shallow waters and up to five are feared dead. Rescuers hope the rest will also die in shallow water.
The BDMLR believes that it is a herd of young males, all in very poor nutritional condition.

The number of beached whales currently stands at ten, they are in shallow waters and as many as six are feared dead.
A spokesperson said: ‘Due to the current weather conditions and rough seas, our team will remain ashore watching from a safe distance.
“Due to the size of the sperm whale, the males reach around 20 meters in length and weigh up to 80 tons, it is not possible to move these animals once stranded, and due to their size, they rarely survive long once on land.”
Emily Mayman, 30, an experienced British Divers Marine Life Rescue medic, was called to the scene after passersby saw the giant sperm whales washed up on shore.

“ We are not sure what caused this, but sometimes this happens to sperm whales scattered along the coast.
‘It’s a huge pity.
There is not much we can do with them. They are such big animals. Only their skulls are so heavy that rescue operations are very difficult.

‘They are kind of a deep dive, you don’t want to try to get them out again.
“It’s very sad to see it because they may be sick.”
“The tide is incredibly strong today so I hope some will float again, but usually when you see a group like this it’s not a great sign.
‘It’s more than you would expect, it’s the most I’ve seen. It is classified as a massive stranding.
