Rangers extended his undefeated start in the Scottish Premiership to nine games with a convincing 5-1 victory in Motherwell which keeps them on top, while Celtic kept the pressure on with a 3-0 win against Hibernian.
James Tavernier converted two first-half penalties at Fir Park on either side of Jordan Jones’ effort. Tavernier’s penalty shootout was the Rangers’ first in the Premiership in 11 months, while Motherwell has now given up nine penalties in 12 games this season.
Substitute Cedric Itten scored his first Rangers goal with a fine shot from the edge of the box, and the Swiss forward then took advantage from the Tavernier corner to put the visitors up 5-0. George Edmundson’s own goal was a small consolation for the hosts.
Celtic remain just one point behind their Glasgow rivals with one game less after achieving a 3-0 home win against Irish. Neil Lennon’s team, like the Rangers, is still undefeated in the league.
First-half goals from Callum McGregor and Albian Ajeti gave Celtic a 2-0 lead at half-time and Mohamed Elyounoussi added a third with 11 minutes to go. Hibs was punished after missing several chances, with Christian Doidge, Kevin Nisbet and Joe Newell missing the target from the front of the arc.
Hibs remained third despite the loss, but hasn’t won at Celtic Park for more than a decade. Aberdeen came within two points of Hibs after pulling off a 10-man 3-0 win Ross County. Lewis Ferguson converted two penalties in the second half after a Marley Watkins header gave Aberdeen a 1-0 lead at interval.
Ferguson scored his first goal from the spot after county captain Iain Vigurs was sent off for his trip on Ross McCrorie and struck again from 12 yards after Josh Reid was penalized for handball.
