Several pubs and establishments in Maesteg are being thoroughly cleaned after claims on social media that people who recently returned from Zakynthos with Covid-19 symptoms had been drinking there over the weekend.

People are believed to have returned to Wales from the Greek island of Zante, which has seen a recent spike in coronavirus cases.

A Bridgend County Council spokesperson told WalesOnline: “We have been informed of the stories circulating on social media of people in the Maesteg area who have returned from Zakynthos and potentially showing symptoms of Covid-19.

“All the passengers who were on the TUI flight to Wales from the Greek island have been told to isolate themselves and undergo a test within the next 48 hours.

“Anyone who believes that they have come into contact with people who have returned from Zante should be alert to the signs of Covid-19 symptoms.”

The council said its Regulatory Shared Services would be in contact with the establishments where these people were allegedly away over the weekend.

Maesteg Councilor Ross Thomas said that Public Health Wales or the local authority had not informed him of an incident until Tuesday evening, but he knew that some local pubs were contacting customers directly to inform them of the situation.

On Facebook, he wrote: “I received many messages about a possible positive Covid case in Maesteg over the weekend. I do not know the exact details, but I understand that some local pubs are reaching out to customers directly to inform them.”

Maesteg Celtic RFC said it closed at 8pm on Tuesday night “due to the current situation.”

Writing on social media, they said: “We have a cleaning company that will arrive tomorrow at 8 in the morning. They have informed us. [Brigend County Borough Council].

“We will post our certificate upon receipt. Just to confirm that Public Health Wales has not contacted us, only BCBC.”

Commercial cleaning company CSC Specialist Cleaning Services confirmed that he was at Maesteg Celtic, MacNamara Arms and The Navi Pub for decontamination on Wednesday morning.

All facilities were demisted and chemically sprayed, they said.

A Public Health Wales spokesperson said: “Public Health Wales investigations into a number of coronavirus cases in Wales have indicated that a lack of social distancing, particularly by a minority in the 20-30 age group, has caused the virus to spread to other groups of people.

“We make a direct appeal to young people to remember that even if they feel that they would not be seriously affected by Covid-19 if they test positive, if they pass it on to older or more vulnerable family, friends or colleagues. it could be extremely serious and even fatal. “
