Photographs taken in the capital’s Soho show people huddled in cool take-out pints as they headed home early.
Drunks in Soho started trying to empty themselves early and the police were patrolling the streets, aware that all the customers must have left before 10pm.
A small police presence could be seen on the pedestrian streets of the nightlife venue Thursday night, but no problems were reported.

Wolverhampton Police posted a video on Twitter thanking the public for complying with the new regulations, saying that all venues had closed at 10 p.m.
The atmosphere was jubilant for some drinkers in Brighton, as the new curfew did not prevent at least one birthday celebration.
Along with the 10 p.m. closing time, all hospitality venues are now required to have table service just to try and help contain the spread of Covid-19.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s highly popular Eat Out to Help Out scheme ended just weeks before the second wave of the virus began to appear.

Bar and restaurant bosses have warned of more closings and job losses to come.
And Hospitality UK noted that many gamblers who left pubs and bars at 10pm returned to private homes for fun.

But the government confirmed that no law prevented people from returning home with their friends after 10 p.m. to drink after the drunks closed their doors.
England’s controversial rules contrast with those in Wales, where pub goers will have an additional 20 minutes to finish their drinks after the last orders.
As of 6 p.m. Thursday, changes to coronavirus regulations mean that Welsh hotel companies, including pubs, cafes, restaurants, sports clubs and casinos, must not supply alcohol between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. following.
The authorized premises may only provide table service to customers when they consume food or beverages.
After a 20 minute period to allow customers to finish their drinks at 10 p.m. M., They must close at 10.20 p.m. M.
The new rules also bring stiffer penalties for companies and customers who break them.

More revelers will also need to pack face covers before nights out, as mask rules tighten in England.
The latest restrictions make them mandatory in taxis and all hospitality venues, until you are seated at a table to eat.
All staff in pubs, restaurants and shops are no longer exempt from the facial covering rules.
