Prince William and Prince Harry met just days before the 23rd anniversary of Princess Diana’s death. The brothers released a major update on plans for a statue of the Princess of Wales, three years after it was commissioned. The brothers said the memorial will be installed on what would have been their 60th birthday.
A joint statement on behalf of the Duke of Sussex and the Duke of Cambridge issued by Kensington Palace read: “The statue that Prince William and Prince Harry have commissioned to commemorate their mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, will be installed on Next year in what would be his 60th birthday.
“The statue was commissioned to mark the 20th anniversary of his death and recognize its positive impact in the UK and around the world.
“The statue will be installed in the Sunken Garden of Kensington Palace on July 1, 2021, marking the Princess’ 60th birthday.
“The Princes hope the statue will help all who visit Kensington Palace to reflect on the life of their mother and her legacy.”
The design for this statue was first announced three years ago, but progress has slowed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The sculptor was nominated by a six-person committee that included Prince William and Prince Harry, as well as Diana’s sister, Lady Sarah McCorquodale.
Kensington Palace has yet to reveal who will attend the unveiling of this statue.

It is very likely that Prince William and Prince Harry, as well as Princess Diana’s brothers, will participate in the emotional event.
Other royals may also be in attendance: Prince Charles, Prince Philip and the Queen were present at the launch of the splendid Diana Hyde Park Memorial Fountain in 2004.
Prince Harry and Prince William have been publicly marking poignant dates related to their mother for the past two decades.
On the 10th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death, the brothers attended, along with other royals, a memorial service.

Before the 20th anniversary of their passing, Prince William and Prince Harry opened up sensationally about their mental health and the scars left by their mother’s death at a very young age.
On August 30, three years ago, the princes also left Kensington Palace, where they both lived at the time, to see the tributes left at the gates by royal fans.
That same evening, the brothers, accompanied by Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, also headed to the Sunken Garden, loved by the late Princess of Wales, to meet the heads of organizations and patronages with whom Diana had worked.
In late June of this year, Prince Harry recorded a speech for the Diana Award that aired on Diana’s 59th birthday.
Congratulating the recipients of the awards, the Duke of Sussex told them that they were the embodiment of the work and beliefs of the Princess of Wales.
He said, “I am incredibly proud to be a part of these awards as they honor my mother’s legacy and bring out the best in people like you.
“You are all doing an incredible job, and in a time of great uncertainty, you have found the power and inspiration within you to make a positive mark on the world.
“And I love that The Diana Award can help you get there.
“I know my mother has been an inspiration to many of you and I can assure you that she would have been fighting in her corner.
“Like many of you, she never took the easy route or the popular or the comfortable one.
“But she stood up for something, and she stood up for the people who needed it.
“Right now, we are seeing situations around the world where division, isolation and anger dominate, as pain and trauma rise to the surface.
“But I see the greatest hope in people like you, and I am confident in the future of the world and your ability to heal, because it is in your hands.”
