The Premier League has been urged to consider a change to the offside rule after another moment of controversy with the video assistant referee in Aston Villa’s win against West Bromwich Albion.
Former senior referee Mark Halsey believes that the VAR rules for deciding offside calls should be changed.
Villa had an Ollie Watkins goal disallowed for offside in Sunday’s 3-0 win at The Hawthorns.
After applying a smart shot to a Matty Cash cross with the score at 2-0, the forward was deemed to have been ahead of the last defender due to the current ‘armpit’ (shirt line) rule.

Leicester City’s James Maddison was similarly punished in his team’s win against Tottenham at the weekend, tweeting: “VAR, get out of my life, man, taking away holiday goals because my armpit was offside.”
Halsey, who spent 14 years practicing in the top flight, has now asked the game’s decision makers to consider changing the rules.
He told This Is Futbol: “I think [Watkins’ goal] it was a bit more offside than [Maddison’s] it was not?
“Even though it’s very, very tight. We need to learn from this, and we need to change.”
Halsey believes that there should be a fixed time limit for making an offside decision and if it remains marginal then the goal should stand.
He added: “We’ve seen so many goals discarded this season for a lot of teams when everyone says ‘what’s going on?’ If they can’t tell in 15 seconds, then it’s a goal; let’s move on. “
It’s not the first time Watkins has had a controversially chalked goal from a tight offside this season.
He was denied the last-minute draw in Villa’s 2-1 loss at West Ham United earlier this month, after nearly three minutes of deliberation and drawing the lines on the screen.

After that incident, Halsey told BirminghamLive: “Offside is a matter of fact. It took him two and a half minutes to get those lines where they wanted them to be.”
“You can make any decision you want if you take two and a half to three minutes. You can make it look as offside as you want. When it takes that long, to me, it’s a goal.
“With Watkins, you can say that offside is a matter of fact, but in those situations where it takes so long, for me, it’s goals. To be fair, they changed the law to only the part of the body that you can. scoring with you may be out of the game.
“So your arm, you can’t be out of play, but if it hits your armpit you can be out of play. That’s absolute nonsense. Nonsense. In all my years watching soccer I haven’t seen a goal scored with an armpit. It needs to change. He can’t have that. “
