A police officer died after being shot by a man who was being held at the Croydon custody center in south London on Friday, metropolitan police said.

In a statement, Scotland Yard said: “At approximately 02:15 on Friday 25 September, a man who was being held at the Croydon custody center on Windmill Lane fired at the officer.

“Officers and paramedics treated him on the spot and the London Ambulance Service took him to hospital. Very tragically, he subsequently died in hospital. We are in the process of informing the entire family of the officer and we are supporting them with specialist officers.

“A 23-year-old man was detained by officers at the scene. He was also taken to hospital with a gunshot wound and remains in critical condition.

“No police firearms were fired during the incident.”

Met Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said: “This is a truly shocking incident in which one of our colleagues lost his life in the most tragic circumstances. My heart goes out to her family, direct colleagues and friends.

“We are currently supporting his family and we also have a dedicated team that provides support to the officers and those in the custody center who witnessed the shooting.

“When a colleague dies in the line of duty, shockwaves and sadness reverberate throughout the Met and our communities. Police are a family, within London and nationally, and we will all deeply regret our colleague.

“We are in the early stages of the investigation and are still working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and will provide further updates when we have them.”
