Police issued an urgent drug warning after the deaths of four youths in the Northeast over the weekend.
The drugs were suspected of contributing to the deaths of two 18-year-old women and a 21-year-old man in Newcastle, as well as an 18-year-old man in Washington, Northumbria police said.
Autopsies will be done, but the force wants to warn the public about the dangers of using drugs.
Deputy Chief of Police Neil Hutchison said: “First, our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who have sadly died.
“Although our investigations are still in a very early stage and we continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths, we are warning people not to use drugs.”
He urged people to “not take the risk, please,” adding: “The consequences could cost you your life.”
Anyone with information on who supplied the drugs to the deceased has been asked to contact the police.
Hutchison added that anyone who has taken these medications and needs emergency medical care should always call 999.
On Saturday, an 18-year-old student went found dead in the university residences of the University of Newcastle.
An 18-year-old man was arrested in connection with his death, which is not believed to be coronavirus-related.
It is unclear if this is related to the alleged drug deaths.
