Five children were found dead in Germany today after their mother allegedly killed them before attempting to kill herself.

The bodies were discovered in an apartment building in Solingen, 32 kilometers from Cologne in western Germany.

According to Bild, a 27-year-old mother is suspected of killing the five youths before jumping in front of a train, but survives with serious injuries.

The five dead children were one, two, three, six and eight years old, while an 11-year-old boy was unharmed.

The youngest of the children killed was an 18-month-old girl, while her surviving 11-year-old brother is now being cared for by relatives.

Emergency personnel were called to the home Thursday afternoon, apparently by the children’s grandmother.

The rescuers themselves were said to be traumatized by what they found in the building and also shocked by the condition of the apartment.

Stefan Weiand, a police spokesman at the home, said it was a “tragic situation” and added that the mother was not yet in a position to be questioned.

“We assume that a crime was committed. How and why that happened, we cannot say, ” he told WDR broadcaster.

One report said rescuers had tried to resuscitate the children, but were too late to save their lives.

The mother is believed to have jumped onto the tracks at Duesseldorf Central Station, 20 miles from Solingen, but survived and is now in hospital.

She allegedly took another child with her to the station, where she was rescued from between the rails of a regional S-Bahn line.

German railway operator DB said there were closures in Duesseldorf because an emergency doctor was needed on the track.

Authorities in nearby Wuppertal are investigating the deaths of the children, with dozens of officers and a fleet of emergency vehicles outside the building.

Police say more details will be revealed today, but it is not yet known how the children died.

Jürgen Hardt, a member of the German parliament, said he had reacted with “horror” when he heard the news of the death of the children.

“I wish that the emergency services and the police have strength while they deal with the case, which will also affect them deeply,” he said.
