“We are more than a few minutes from the future of virtual reality.”

PlayStation boss Jim Ryan has said he believes in the potential of virtual reality for video games, but also that the technology is still years away from being truly “meaningful.”

Talking to the Washington Post [paywall], Ryan reflected on the current PlayStation VR headsets as a way that Sony had gained “expertise” in the development of virtual reality hardware and games. But it also seemed like we shouldn’t expect a new PSVR model anytime soon.

“I think we are more than a few minutes away from the future of virtual reality,” Ryan said. “PlayStation believes in virtual reality. Sony believes in virtual reality, and we definitely believe that at some point in the future, virtual reality will represent a significant component of interactive entertainment. Will it be this year? No. Will it be next year? No. Will it ever come? We believe that.

“And we are very happy with all the experience we have gained with PlayStation VR, and we look forward to seeing where that takes us in the future.”

Rather than creating a new PSVR model for the PlayStation 5, the next console will simply support your existing headsets, although you will need to order a free PS5 PSVR adapter, which you can order directly from Sony.

Sony last gave an update on PSVR sales earlier this year. As of December 31, 2019, 5 million units had been sold worldwide, not a small number, although it doesn’t come close to the PS4 console’s user base of 106 million at the time.
