Piccadilly Gardens has been evacuated as police respond to reports of a ‘suspicious package on a bus’
Images and video from the scene show a large number of police officers in the area.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed that they were called in to report that a suspicious item had been found on a bus.
In a statement, the police said: “At around 1:15 pm today (Saturday 5 September 2020), the police were called to report that a suspicious item had been found on a bus at Manchester bus station. Piccadilly.
“The officers are present and several roads are closed.
“The bus has been evacuated as a precautionary measure and there is still a cordon.
“Investigations are ongoing.”
Anyone with information should call the police on 101 quoting incident number 1452 of 05/09/2020, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
Transport for Greater Manchester said on Twitter: “Due to a police incident on Parker Street, Piccadilly is closed.
“Congestion expected on Portland St, use alternate route if possible.”
Manchester City Councilor Pat Karney tweeted: “Suspicious package on a bus in Piccadilly.
“Response to major incidents”.
