Wayne Rooney will be the ‘main figure’ in Derby’s new interim coach setup after the club fired manager Phillip Cocu.
Cocu replaced Frank Lampard in the summer of 2019 and guided the club to a 10th place in his first season, but Derby is currently at the bottom of the table after just one win in 11 games in the current campaign.
Derby captain Rooney is expected to lead the team’s training and selection, with the support of coaches Liam Rosenior, Shay Given and Justin Walker.
Rooney has not been named interim or interim manager at this stage, and Sky Sports News He does not expect the new full-time position to be appointed in Derby until the acquisition is completed by member of the Abu Dhabi royal family, Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan.
The imminent deal should be finalized by the end of the month and has been approved by the English Football League.
“I am sorry that Philip and his staff have left the club and I want to personally thank him for all his help and encouragement as part of his coaching staff,” said Rooney.
“The most important thing now is to stabilize the club and start moving up the board.”
Rooney has made no secret of his desire to be a coach and that is what attracted him to the role of player-coach at Derby, which he has been doing since December last year.
You have yet to meet potential new owners, and it will have to be a mutual decision if you want to take over as manager in the long term.
Rooney will want to know more about Sheikh Khaled’s ambitions and plans for the club before committing to taking his first managerial job at Pride Park.
Cocu handled in ‘extremely challenging situations’
Derby thanked Cocu for his service in what they said were “extremely challenging situations.”
The 50-year-old former Barcelona and Netherlands midfielder is in self-isolation until Friday after being in close contact with Derby Chief Executive Stephen Pearce, who tested positive for Covid-19 on November 5.
His assistant coach Chris van der Weerden and first team coach Twan Scheepers have also left the Derby.
“Although this season has not gone the way we all would have liked so far on the pitch, I passionately believe in the project we are starting to build and I have no doubt that the future is bright for the club,” said Cocu.
Derby also paid tribute to Cocu for his financial contributions and personal efforts towards the club’s community projects during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I wish the best to everyone associated with the club, both on and off the pitch, particularly with the Stay Safe, Stay Fit, Stay Connected project, which I am very proud to have started,” added Cocu.
