Paul Merson has identified a great advantage that Manchester United has over rivals Manchester City and Arsenal.

The Red Devils were enjoying a hot streak that saw them close the gap in Chelsea’s fourth place just three points before the coronavirus outbreak suspended the Premier League season in March.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team seemed set to be late for Champions League venues thanks to the signing in January of Portugal star Bruno Fernandes and the defensive performances of newly appointed club captain Harry Maguire.

And Sky Sports expert Merson insists that United is the team he looks forward to the most when football returns and said his “young and better” squad is something Arsenal and City don’t have.

United has a number of emerging young stars, including Scott McTominay

“When soccer finally restarts, the team that I hope to see more than anyone is Manchester United, “Merson wrote in his StarSport column.

“Because they were absolutely flying when we entered the block, winning eight of their last 11 games, scoring many goals and being undefeated since January.”

“In fact, I would say that nobody played better than United before the forced break in March.”

“Can you continue where you left off? That is the $ 64 million question, but there is clear evidence that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is beginning to assemble a formidable squad at Old Trafford.”

“And he’s a young one, he’s getting better, which is something you can’t really say about the likes of Arsenal or even Manchester City.”

The former Gunners striker also believes United will close the gap with league leaders Liverpool next season despite the Reds currently going 37 points.

“I’m not saying United is necessarily a title contender next season, but they certainly are going in the right direction and will be much closer to the top than they have been in recent seasons,” added Merson.

“If there is a question mark above them under Solskjaer, it is because they have a scratched side.”

“Just as United have been able to achieve some wins under Solskjaer, there has also been a tendency to have bad races as well.”

“You don’t find the likes of Pep Guardiola or Jurgen Klopp lasting drops. True top managers rarely go more than two or three games without a win.”

“So yes, the jury is still in Solskjaer, but if I was a United fan, I’d be more excited than most about what the future holds.”
