Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sends title message to Manchester United stars ahead of trip to Sheffield United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knows that this season has given Manchester United the best chance to win the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson resigned.

United have been unable to fight for the title since Ferguson signed to the club’s 20th championship in 2013, ending his gleaming reign in style.

But if United can win a sixth straight away league game at Sheffield United, as well as their hand game against Burnley, they could be just one point from the top.

With Solskjaer expecting this season’s unpredictable results to continue, he acknowledged the possibility of United making a realistic effort for the title for the first time since the end of the Ferguson era.

Solskjaer knows this is United’s best chance to win the title since Fergie retired.

“I would be disappointed if the players didn’t think that we can present a challenge,” Solskjaer said.

“For the moment, anything goes in the league. There are different reasons for different results.

“I feel like we are improving, but we have to improve a lot to take the next step as well.”

Tonight’s trip to Bramall Lane is the start of six games in 16 days for United, a period Solskjaer admitted will be an indicator of his team’s title credentials.

“This is a great streak of games for us,” Solskjaer said. “After Villa’s game on New Year’s Day, we have a little break in the league.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have missed Jadon Sancho in the summer, but he still made some big moves in the transfer market with Donny van de Beek, Alex Telles and Edinson Cavani arriving.

But their start to the season has been mixed, with a home loss to Crystal Palace and a 6-1 beating of the Spurs at one end of the scale, and a tremendous 2-1 win over PSG in Paris in the other.

The question now is whether they can find the right balance.

“This period will be vital and it will be easier for me to respond [about a title challenge] around that time.

“This season is going to be very unpredictable and with ups and downs.

“Whoever finds consistency and energy will have a better chance than in recent seasons, because there have been some teams out of control.

“For us, the faster we can get the game in hand against Burnley, the better we play, so the league table looks like it should be.”

Edinson Cavani, who missed a 0-0 derby draw with Manchester City, is close to coming back from injury but is unlikely to take a chance tonight.

Solskjaer declined to rule out left-back Brandon Williams on loan next month, and Southampton are interested in signing the 20-year-old.

“Brandon has done really well since he joined the team,” Solskjaer said. “He had a slow start to the season for different reasons.

“I think he is coming back to himself now. I liked watching him, I have enjoyed it more in training, he has played a couple of U23 matches and he has been more involved.

“That is something we will see in January, but we rate Brandon very well, so whoever is interested, make no mistake.”
