A spokesperson for the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of two staff members, both porters at John Radcliffe Hospital and both married to members of our nursing teams .

“Both men were popular and hard-working members of our fantastic team of porters at John Radcliffe Hospital. Their colleagues, family and friends in the broader community will greatly miss them.

“Our thoughts go out to their wives and families, as well as their close colleagues. Families have asked that their privacy be respected at this sad time.”

EMERGENCY PPE

It comes after the government has faced criticism regarding the lack of protective equipment for NHS personnel.

Earlier today, Home Secretary Priti Patel said she “regretted if people feel there was a PPE failure” after the death of frontline NHS personnel.

Stories have emerged of nurses forced to share protective gear despite being on the front line of the pandemic.

There have also been reports of exhausted doctors forced to cut hospital curtains to make makeshift gowns due to a lack of protective clothing, and others tore open with trash bags around bodies and mouths.

The news comes as the UK death toll from coronavirus rose to 9,875 today.

That is a jump of 917 in the last 24 hours compared to yesterday’s total of 8,958, as the country remains blocked fighting the virus.

Yesterday, Britain’s coronavirus death toll rose by 980 in 24 hours, making it the largest increase yet and more deadly than the worst day of its outbreak in Spain (961).
