A 73-year-old retired nurse was arrested after trying to remove her 97-year-old mother with dementia from a nursing home.
Granddaughter and former Coronation Street actress Leandra Ashton, 41, filmed part of the incident in a parking lot in Market Weighton, East Yorkshire on Tuesday.
Ashton claims that she and her mother, Ylenia Angeli, took her grandmother, Tina Thornborough, out of the house where she is “deteriorating” because they had not seen her for nine months.
In a Facebook post, Ms Ashton wrote: ‘When the rules, like so many in this period of our history, claim to be in place to’ protect ‘, but are still causing incalculable harm to physical and mental health, then it begins to break the rules. ‘
‘We only have power of attorney for my grandmother’s finances. Not for their welfare, ‘he added.
Before the confinement we could overcome this by visiting my grandmother regularly.
Now we can’t. My mother was arrested because she refused to bring my grandmother to the residence.
“It feels like we’re living through the worst Kafka-style nightmare. Masked people coming to take your relative.
“I find myself on the wrong side of the law for the first time in my life.”
She argued that the rules sometimes needed to be ‘challenging and changing’ and proposed relatives are given ‘key worker status’ to allow them to go to a family member’s private room to visit, feed and care for them.
In the pictures, Ms. Thornborough, 97, can be seen sitting in the passenger seat of a car with a police vehicle parked in front of her.
Angeli, 73, is also seen sitting handcuffed in the back of the police vehicle.
Speaking with a police officer and others present, Ms. Ashton criticizes the situation “ridiculous”.
“When the rules start to separate families, I think we have to question the rules,” he is heard saying to the police.
He stated that his mother is a trained nurse who wanted to care for his grandmother at home.
Ashton briefly appeared on Coronation Street during 2016 as Saskia Larson, Will Chatterton’s fiancee, played by Leon Ockenden.
In a statement, Humberside Police Deputy Chief Chris Noble said the force responded to “a report of an assault on a nursing home” in Market Weighton at 11.15 am Tuesday.
“The nursing home also reported that a woman for whom they were legally responsible had been taken from the home by her daughter,” he added.
The agents found both women together with a third woman nearby and informed them that they would have to return the lady to the house, as it is their legal duty.
‘The situation was distressing and emotional for everyone and the woman did not want her mother to be returned to the residence staff.
‘The officer who attended had to make sure everyone was safe and in particular the 93-year-old woman who was fragile and vulnerable, so he made the decision to briefly restrain the 73-year-old woman until the situation was calm. and under control.
Then the officers returned the old woman to the house.
The 73-year-old woman was immediately unleashed, arrested and allowed to return home with her daughter.
She and her daughter thanked the officers for the way they had handled the incident.
‘We understand that this is an emotional and difficult situation for everyone involved.
“We stand in solidarity with all the families who are in this position and we will continue to provide all the support we can to both parties.”
