Fabinho will undergo a scan on Wednesday after sustaining a hamstring injury during Liverpool’s win over FC Midtjylland, and Jurgen Klopp said it was “the last thing we needed”.
The midfielder, who has been at center for the last three games, approached half an hour at Anfield in Tuesday night’s Champions League clash at Anfield and was replaced by young Rhys Williams.
Liverpool have already lost Virgil van Dijk up to eight months after he damaged his knee ligaments against Everton earlier this month, while Joel Matip has also been out of the game since the Merseyside derby.
Klopp couldn’t say how long he expected Fabinho to be out, as the club will know more after the player has a scan on Wednesday.
But the Liverpool manager admitted that the first signs are not looking good.
He said after the game: “It’s exactly the last thing we needed. I know you felt a hamstring, and that’s not good. He said he could have kept playing but without sprints, which doesn’t help.
“We have to wait for the scan, obviously, but when someone has a muscle problem, it’s quite rare that the doctor calls me the next morning and says’ false alarm, everything is fine. You can go again. ‘
“Now it’s just about how long, that’s all. It’s absolutely not great, but that’s the situation. “
The Brazilian’s injury came on a night when Liverpool didn’t get away with it as the six-time European champions struggled to beat the Danish team 2-0 thanks to Diogo Jota’s touch and a penalty from Mohamed Salah.
Fabinho’s departure meant Klopp was forced to bring in 19-year-old center-back Williams, who teamed up with Joe Gomez for the rest of the game.
Williams was making his first Champions League appearance at Anfield, but he didn’t let the occasion get the better of him as he helped Liverpool keep a clean sheet.
And Klopp was delighted with the young man’s efforts.
Klopp added: “When you lose almost one of the last men in the back in the first half and bring in a 19-year-old, nobody knows how that will work.
But Rhys had no problem in a situation. He did really well, that was really good!
“He was even bossy, talkative and all that kind of stuff, so it was a really good game for him.”
Klopp may have no choice but to start Williams in Saturday’s home clash with West Ham, with few other options available to him.
When asked if Matip could come back for the Hammers game, Klopp said: “I don’t know, we have to see.”
There were also fears among Liverpool fans that captain Jordan Henderson had suffered an injury Tuesday night when he was substituted at halftime.
However, Klopp revealed that Henderson is fine and that the decision to eliminate him was a tactical one.
Klopp said: “I decided before the game that Hendo would only play 45 minutes. I wanted to continue, but I made the change.
“At halftime we had to change things… Hendo is fine! He wanted to stay in the field, but I had to show a little responsibility ”.
