Group Soccer Editor Paddy davitt has registered its marks after the 2-1 victory in the Canary Islands Championship against Wycombe.
Here’s Paddy’s verdict on Daniel Farke’s men, who needed Mario Vrancic in his majestic best form on an injury-time free kick to seal the last in a growing line of late wins.
• Tim Krul
Not on the same wavelength as Grant Hanley to give Scott Kashket the smoothest of goals. Watch brief for the most part, but imposing shot in the last act of the contest. 6
• Max Aarons
Not nearly as safe as one might hope. He fought to keep the impressive Fred Onyedinma in check. 6
• Grant Hanley
He had to take decisive action without enough pace in David Wheeler’s downfall to catch up with Tim Krul. Second-half head hit cleared the line. 6
• Ben Gibson
You can consider yourself lucky not to have conceded a penalty when replays clearly showed a pull on Onyedinma. Without limits the fight with Uche Ikpeazu. 6
• Xavi Quintilla
Stronger in his defensive work than on weekdays. Series of very provocative installments without anyone. 7
• Oliver Skipp
He forced the rotation that led to City’s first game. But like his teammates, he found it much more difficult to go when Wycombe was back on level terms to control the game. 6
• Lukas Rupp
He became more influential as Wycombe grew weary. A blocked shot. A career prepared Todd Cantwell. 7
• Emi Buendia
Like old times with an assist converted by Teemu Pukki. In and out, but no more killer passes. 7
• Teemu Pukki
Beautiful finish after the pull of the trigger to get away from the Wycombe bottom line. Pukki vintage. Great chance for a second shortly after when he turned to his left. Frustrated by Ryan Allsopp after the break. 7
• Todd Cantwell
Pushed and tested in that fourth quarter to provoke a winner. Upward shot to Allsopp to his left. 7
• Jordan Hugill
Ineffective. Not good enough at his linking game and Limerick’s one corner bar he encountered on the way down is not a goal threat. 6
Substitutes for the city
• Adam Idah (for Hugill, 58) 5
It added a much needed dynamism. He hit Allsopp’s goal, but the unnecessary red card for a smug shove comes at a high price.
• Mario Vrancic (for Skipp, 68) 8
Magnificent free kick to add another three points for his club in a matter of days. Wycombe, however, felt that the set piece opening piece should never have been awarded.
• Przemyslaw Placheta (for Rupp, 85) n / a
