Northern Ireland Coronavirus Updates As NI Executive Accepts Changes To Restrictions

The Northern Ireland Executive agreed to lift some Covid-19 restrictions after the switch ends next week.

Northern Ireland is almost halfway through the current two-week circuit breaker rolled out across the country on November 27.

The current restrictions will end at 11:59 pm on December 10, and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Michael McBride and Chief Scientific Officer Professor Ian Young will present the latest data to ministers on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Robin Swann announced that final approval has been given to a coronavirus vaccine.

Speaking on Wednesday, Minister Swann said it was an “enormously significant day” in the fight against Covid-19, but that “people must not lower their guard.

Justice Minister Naomi Long said there is a “strong argument” that some relaxations could be allowed due to a drop in transmission levels.

She told the BBC’s Nolan Show: “We have to listen to the advice they give us.

“We will have the presentations that come from the Medical Director and the Scientific Director about where we are at the moment, and we can have that discussion in the round about what happens.

“We are currently in a very tight set of restrictions, and there is certainly a strong argument that I think we could see some loosening.”
