Northern Ireland Coronavirus: Health Department reports six more deaths and 2,143 new cases

The Health Department has reported six other coronavirus-related deaths.

In Wednesday’s dashboard update, the Department says five deaths occurred in the past 24 hours and one outside of this reporting period.

This increase brings the total number of virus-related deaths in Northern Ireland to 1,311.

And the Department’s data also shows a daily increase in positive cases by 2,143, bringing the total positive cases to 70,905.

At 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 30, there are 35 patients in the ICU who have tested positive for coronavirus.

Meanwhile, Robin Swann announced the news that a second Covid-19 vaccine has been approved for use in the UK.

The Oxford / AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine had been approved, just a few weeks after the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccination program began.

Now, the Department of Health has said that it means that GPs in Northern Ireland can begin the first phase of vaccinating the population from January 4, starting with those aged 80 and over.

So far, in Northern Ireland, 8,940 nursing home residents have been vaccinated, as well as 10,484 nursing home employees and 14,259 HSC employees through the first approved vaccine.
